Moving the Family This Summer in NE FL? Tips as School Wraps Up!

If you're a parent with kids in school around here, you know that late May and early June mean one big thing: the school year is wrapping UP! 🎒📚☀️ For a lot of families, this time of year also means thinking about making a move. Maybe you're upsizing, downsizing, or just heading to a new neighborhood. Moving anytime can be a hustle, but moving with kids right as school gets out adds a whole other layer.

So, if you're looking at a potential summer move, especially with school ending, let's talk about getting a solid plan together. Here are a few ideas for parents getting ready to move this summer:

Tips for a Smoother Summer Move with School-Aged Kids

  1. Get the Ball Rolling YESTERDAY (Okay, maybe today): If you're selling, getting your house ready and on the market before summer officially kicks off can be smart. Buyers are out looking now! If you're buying, get with a lender and get that pre-approval squared away first. Then, let's start hunting now so you can hopefully close and get settled before summer boredom (or that July heat!) really sets in. My background as a Veteran means I know a thing or two about logistics and planning ahead – trust me, it helps with moving!

  2. School's Out! Get Your Paperwork! This is HUGE. Before that school office closes up for the summer, make sure you get copies of everything you need for your kids for their new school. Think report cards, immunization records, transfer forms, maybe even notes about any special programs or needs. Having this stuff in hand saves you a massive headache later when you're trying to register them somewhere new in August.

  3. Bring the Kids into the Loop (A Little): Depending on their age, talk to your kids about the move. Show them pictures of the new house (if you've found one!), look up parks or fun spots in the new neighborhood online. Let them decorate a box or two for packing their toys. Giving them a little bit of ownership can help ease some of the worry.

  4. Saying "See Ya Later": The end of the school year is already a time for goodbyes. Make sure your kids have a chance to swap contact info with friends, maybe have one last playdate, or write a nice note to their teacher. Closing out the old chapter is important before starting the new one.

  5. Moving Day Survival Kit: On the actual moving day, if possible, see if the kids can hang out with a grandparent, aunt and uncle, or close friend. It keeps them safe and gives you one less thing to worry about. If they're staying with you, pack a special box just for them – favorite books, games, snacks, comfy blanket, maybe a tablet. Stuff they can easily get to right away.

  6. Explore the New Turf: Once you're in the new place, take some time to explore the neighborhood with your kids. Find the closest park, the local library, maybe an ice cream spot. Getting familiar with the new surroundings helps them feel more comfortable. Knowing the local scene from my time outdoors and, yep, even playing poker and talking to folks, gives me a good feel for different areas and what they offer families.

  7. Don't Forget the Fun: Moving is stressful, but it's still summer! Try to build in some fun activities amidst the unpacking chaos. Hit a local splash pad, head to the beach (we've got some great ones around here!), check out a local festival. Balance the work with some play.

Moving a family is a big project, especially when you're juggling the end-of-school craziness. But with a little planning and some of these tips, you can make it a smoother ride for everyone.
